Many travelers value good food regardless of how much they have paid for their airline ticket. Of late, more business travelers have had to endure the often poor quality of food onboard aircraft due to corporate cutbacks and general economy measures.
There are currently 3 ways that I know to ensure better in-flight food:
- Pay for First or Business Class travel
- Make your own
- Have a meal made and delivered to you
Everything has its pros and cons, but even when flying Business or First Class, good food can never be guaranteed.
Making your own meal is a great way to ensure that you can eat exactly what you like, but this does presuppose some culinary talent. The biggest disadvantage to DIY is the time involved and most people are usually short of time just before travelling, especially business travelers. *
The third way is to ask a company specialized in gourmet meals for flights.
They explain the origin of their company:
"Those who go to Paris never want to leave. And if you're an epicurean (OK, a foodie) it's almost impossible to tear yourself away. Which was the predicament of SkyMeals co-founders Richard Katz and Alan Levin, who were taking their final stroll down the Boulevard St. Germain. So they figured out a way to prolong the experience. They stopped at several local specialty shops and purchased a gourmet selection of cured meats, rustic breads, pungent cheeses, delicate pastries, and rich desserts to take with them on their return flight."
Their meals are supplied in an insulated carrier and have been designed to taste best chilled or at room temperature. No heating is required. Everything is packed to stay fresh and easily pass through airport security.
For about $30 you can order a gourmet meal including delivery to your home. If you order before 5:00 p.m. on the day prior to travel, your meal will be delivered at a convenient time before your trip to the airport. Alternatively, you can order 6 hours before you need your package or collect it from a location close to the airport.
The bad news is that currently only the greater Los Angeles area is served, although other cities are planned.
Many travelers who enjoy good food cannot afford the difference in air fare between flying in economy and first or even business class. Business travelers accustomed to better food in First Class seats are finding life difficult following cutbacks in travel expenses and relegation to Coach Class. Simultaneously, Airlines have been cutting back on the quality of food in Economy Class.
* I mentioned earlier in this article that I know of only one person, Dr. Otto Weizman, who always seems to have time before travel, but that is worth another story. However, he explains it in his book: "Simplify Your Life! Secrets for Gaining the Personal Freedom to Live and Work Anywhere".
