Some people living abroad ask me what to do at festive times. They feel left out of things if they don't have their family around them. I always recommend that they try to join in the festivities.
At this time of the year, religious festivals are taking place in many countries around the world. If religion play an important part in the culture of the country where you are living, then try to find out when the religious ceremonies, acts or processions take place. You will often find that you are encouraged to participate. Even if you are not religious yourself you will sometimes be invited to join in, especially if seen hanging out near the church or temple by your local neighbours. Your participation would gain you kudos in their eyes and even if it is a one-off occurrence, you will learn more about what is important to the local people.
Whether at home or abroad, not all events and festivals are of a religious nature however. Here is a site dedicated to providing information about festivals around the world, which might be useful for people living abroad or even for travellers. With so much going on in some foreign countries, I think they will have a tough job in keeping up, but it's an admirable aim.
If you have been living abroad for some time, then you will most likely know which publications advertise local events. It will be worth your while to seek them out and help broaden your knowledge of foreign cultures.
