This is not a joke; the report comes from a credible source! Post by Sue Ngon.
Scripting News quotes a person at the FCC saying that "Anyone could access the Internet, with any kind of computer, for any type of application, and read or say pretty much what they wanted. This Internet may be dying." The Mercury News reports on Control of the Internet.
My colleague has been writing extensively on personal freedom recently and that was not intended to be the main tenor of this web site. The emphasis was to be on 'travel and living anywhere at home or abroad'. However, one needs the freedom to be able to do this and it appears that more personal freedoms have been encroached in the past year that can be remembered.
One important reason for an open Internet is so that the needy in this world can access unedited information and help to educate themselves. Those needs might not be provided in their own country and the Internet provides an ideal medium. To think that plans are being made to undermine the concept of the 'popular' Internet is incredible. To think that these plans are being conceived by a major player in the World economy is incredulous. What arrogance... as if the Internet were proprietary! Gentlemen, that is not an honorable measure or even thought!
The privacy risks are obvious, as are the restrictions in communication for small company owners, people living abroad (expatriates) and travelers.
