Just imagine you pick up your phone and hear, "Hi, I just found your private phone number in Google, so I thought I would call to sell you a vacuum cleaner." What may be common knowledge to geeks is by far known to everybody.
Most Internet users know that lots of information is made public but Google has made your private phone number easier to find. Now you can find most phone numbers in the US, just by typing the name and city in the Google search box.
Some people who want to simplify their life and value their personal privacy, just don't relish the thought of their private phone number being so readily available.
So if you too value your personal privacy and went to painstaking measures to ensure that your name doesn't appear on Telemarketer lists, then make sure it didn't just slip into the Google database.
You can check it here.
The good news is that you can also have it removed here.
If you are a frequent traveler and often leave your home empty when you are travelling, then having an unlisted number is a wise idea. If thieves are planning a break in, then they often phone in advance to see if anybody is at home. A voice mail or answering system is no deterrent. The more you can restrict the circle of people who have access to your phone number, the safer you will be.
